Internet Spending

26th Aug 2008

SOME BASIC STATISTICS

According to the official government statistics there are approximately 24.5 million householders in the UK. By the end of 2007 61% had home internet access – a significant increase on the previous year.

The internet spend for 2007 amounted to a staggering £46.6bn – an increase of no less than 54% on the previous year. That rate of increase appears to be have continued into this year. The “Christmas spend” (Oct-Dec) 2007 was £15.2bn.

Commissions payable on purchases made via the site vary enormously – from as little as 1% to (exceptionally) 33% or 50%. As a very rough rule of thumb the bigger name the supplier the lower the commission, though in certain “sectors” (bookmakers, bingo and financial services - including motor & travel insurance) even the “big names” pay substantial commission for new customers.

Taken together we believe that the overall average commission per £1 spent is around 4% - suggesting a truly remarkable £1.84billion of commission is out there on last year's spend – equivalent to about £75 per household – before taking any account of either this year's growth in online spending or the probable make-up of your membership.

I think we all accept that there is no such thing as a free lunch – but getting your members (and supporters*) to deal via OneExtraClick is, as near as we are ever going to get!

* Friends/relations/family/business associates can be encouraged by your members/supporters to use the site – you benefit from the commission whoever/wherever it comes from.

CONCLUSION

This really is a no-cost opportunity for all amateur sports clubs and charities. As with everything in life the actual level of benefit accruing will reflect the effort put in – but for a change it does, amongst other things, give the club's hard working core an opportunity to spread the net a lot more widely than usual.
